25 مئی 2020ء کو میناپولس، مینیسوٹا کے پاوڈرتھرون کمیونٹی میں جارج فلائڈ نامی ایک افریقی-امریکی شخص کو قتل کر دیا گیا۔ اس کے دونوں کو باندھ دیا گیا، ایک سفید فام امریکی پولس جوان جو میناپولس پولس ڈپارٹمنٹ کا افسر تھا، نے اسے زمین گرادیا تھا اور اس کے چہرے کا اپنا گھٹنہ رکھ دیا تھا۔ مجرم چاوین کے خلاف داخل رپورٹ میں کہا گیا ہے کہ اس نے 8 منٹ اور 46 سیکینڈ تک جارج کو اسی حالت میں رکھا۔ 2 منٹ اور 53 سیکینڈ قبل وہ مرچکا تھا مگر وہ افسر اس حالت میں بھی اس کو دبائے رکھا۔[3][4][5][6][7] تو تھاو، جے الیگزینڈر اور تھومس کے لین نے فلائڈ کو حراست میں لیا تھا اس طور پر کہ الیگذینڈر نے اس کی پیٹھ کو مضبوطی سے پکڑ رکھا تھا، لین نے اس کے پیروں کو جکڑ لیا اور تھاو نے آس پاس کے لوگوں کو مزاحمت کرنے سے روک رکھا تھا۔[8]:6:24[9][10] فلائڈ پر ایک بازار میں 20 ڈالر کے جعلی نوٹ کو استعمال کرنے کا الزام تھا اور اسی الزام کی بنا پر اسے گرگتار کیا گیا تھا۔[11] پولس کا کہنا ہے کہ فلائڈ نے خود کو حراست میں دینے کے انکار کیا تھا اور جسمانی مزاحمت کی تھی۔[12][13][14][15] لیکن میڈیا کا کہنا ہے کہ قریب کے سیکیورٹی کیمروں میں فلائڈ کے مزاحمت کی کوئی تصویر موجود نہیں ہے۔[16][17] بعد میں پیش کی گئی مجرمانہ رپورٹ میں خلاصہ کیا گیا ہے کہ باڈی کیمرا فوٹیج کے مطابق فلائڈ بار بار کہ رہا تھا کہ وہ سانس نہیں کے پا رہا تھا۔ اس نے کار میں جانے سے منع کر دیا اور جان بوجھ کر زمین کر گر گیا۔[18][19][20][21]

Floyd had been handcuffed for allegedly passing a phony $20 bill at the corner store. He refused to get into a squad car and was "intentionally falling down," saying he was claustrophobic and struggling to breathe, according to the complaint.
