The Ankara Castle comprises an inner castle that sits atop the most prominent hill in the city and an outer castle encircling it. The outer castle was built in the Byzantine period by the Emperor Constantinus II in 668 is 110 meters high and marks the edges of the old Ankara. Renovated many times in Roman, Byzantian and Seljuk periods, one of the major restorations of the castle was during the Ottoman period in 1832 by İbrahim Paşa, the son of Kavalalı Mehmet Ali Paşa. Yapım tarihi bilinmeyen Ankara Kalesi, konumlandığı tepenin yüksek bölümünü kaplayan bir iç kale ve onun etrafını kuşatan bir dış kaleden oluşur. Bizans döneminde, MS. 668’de İmparator II. Konstans tarafından yaptırılan dış kalenin yüksekliği 110 metredir. Döneminde Ankara şehrini çevreleyen kale, Roma, Bizans ve Selçuklu hâkimiyetlerine girmiş ve zaman içerisinde çeşitli onarımlar geçirmiştir. Ankara Kalesi’nin en önemli restorasyonlarından biri Osmanlı döneminde, Kavalalı Mehmet Ali Paşa’nın oğlu İbrahim Paşa tarafından 1832’de yaptırılmıştır. Günümüzde başkentin önemli bir kültür varlığı olan yapı, çeşitli festivallere ev sahipliği yapmaktadır.
