ighness is supremehead of the Church of England according to thestatute in that behalf made. The remainder, which is in Latin, is to thiseffect: All and each of these things took placeas above described and recited, on the 20th of April,1535, 26 Henry VHL, in the presence of the afore-said honourable Thomas Cromwell, in his ordinarycourt, called the Rolls, London. Being present alsoMessrs, Edward Foxe, the kings almoner; JohnBell and John Tregunwell, doctors in laws ; ThomasBedyll, Archdeacon of Cornwall; Richard Rich, thekings solicitor; and Ralph Sadler. The deed isattested by John ap Rice, the notary.^ The two prisoners, having thus boldly refusedto renounce their religion, returned to. the Tower,where they were joined by Father Richard Rey-nolds, the Bridgettine.^ A few days later, Cromwelland the Royal Commissioners visited the prisoners.They brought with them a copy of the Act of ^ P.R.O., State Papers, Henry VIIL, mentioned in Lettersand Papers., vol. viii. 565.^ Supra, p. 128.

I41 Parliament under which it was intended to condemnthem ; and on the back of the document, which isstill to be seen among the State Papers in the PublicRecord Office, are the following memoranda :—• John Houghton says that he cannot take theking, our sovereign, to be supreme head of theChurch of England afore the Apostles of ChristsChurch. * Robert Lawrence says that there is one CatholicChurch and one Divine, of which the Bishop ofRome is the head ; therefore he cannot believe thatthe king is supreme head of the Church. Augustine Webster says that he cannot (take)the king, our sovereign lord, to be supreme head ofthe Church, but him that is by the docto(rs of) theChurch taken head of the Church, that is the Bishopof Rome, as Ambrose, Jerome, Augustine (affirm),and is made at the Council of Basil. Richard Reynolds says that he intends nomalice to our sovereign lord the king, but he wouldspend his blood for . . . that he is head of theChurch that hath been this thre
