Logo?[ترمیم]

Hello, I am Phoebe from the English Wikipedia and Meta... I am just curious why your logo has an image of a sun behind it. Does it symbolize something? Thanks! -- phoebe

  • Thank Phoebe for your message. Urdu logo symbolize nothing special then just a Wikipedia logo, if you have any objection on it, we can discuss to change it. Samarqandi --سمرقندی 02:05, 15 اگست 2008 (UTC)

Hi! I have reverted the logo to the last "acceptable" version. While temporary "celebration" logos may be acceptable for short periods, for the duration Wikipedia logo must be in a uniform format. I will admit that the text on this logo is rather ugly. Please contact me to work on getting an acceptable logo for the project in the uniform standard that the Wikimedia Foundation can accept as well as one which uses a proper font. bastique talk 19:34, 5 فروری 2009 (UTC)

Bilingual editors: Please help[ترمیم]

I do not speak any Urdu, so can someone bilingual please help?

I posted this previously on what was linked to from English Wikipedia as the Village Pump, but a user on Simple English Wikipedia directed me here.

Hello. I am an editor from the Simple English Wikipedia named Jonas D. Rand. You can see my userpage here. I speak English at a native level. I have come to Urdu Wikipedia to inquire about an editor on the Simple English Wikipedia who constantly posts articles about Pakistan, but some are copied from other websites that do not explicitly permit copying of content. There are also concerns about whether the articles are neutral, since the editor has a pro-Pakistan point of view about Kashmir. See also: simple:User:Chenzw/Pakistan

When anyone attempts to communicate with this user, they never respond. Nothing posted on the user's talk page is ever responded to. Both template warnings and genuine attempts to communicate have been unsuccessful.

The editor is annoying to some people, but I suggested that instead of warning the user, we should have someone try to communicate with the user in their native language. Since most of the editor's contributions regard Pakistan or India, I suggested that an Urdu-speaking editor try to communicate with the editor. Can someone try to do something about this? Yours,

Jonas Dalton Rand

68.96.213.118 04:29, 1 دسمبر 2008 (UTC)

  • Hello Jonas, I think Village pump is also OK for your post. I tried to understand your message but after reading it, there are some questions in my mind.
  1. There are many strange and unusual postes on every wikipedia including this urdu wikipedia, but some administrator or a senior user can always correct or revert the strange edits, what is the difficulty then?
  2. I saw the article on simple english wiki about kashmir and did not find it pro-pakistan. May be I am looking a changed version, do you think it is still biased or pro-pakistan?.
  3. can you provide the link of the user page of that user you mentioned above?
  4. can you provide some links of the pro-pakistan type of articles edited by that user?

--سمرقندی 07:14, 1 دسمبر 2008 (UTC)

Eptalon (Simple Wikipedia administrator) and I did not want to block, as there could have been other things that would cause him not to respond to warnings or anything else on his talk page, such as a poor understanding of English. He posted from an IP address geolocating to a service that helps Migrants in the UK. Majorly and Synergy (also Simple Wikipedia administrators) were not very reluctant to block, but I thought it was not a very good idea. I thought that we should try anything to get him to communicate, as long as it is not harmful, including bringing someone from Urdu (most common language in Pakistan) Wikipedia to try to communicate with the user, and take the educational approach about Wikipedia (by trying to introduce various things about Wikipedia to the editor), only in Urdu. I thought to come over to Urdu Wikipedia and ask would be the right idea.

The user edits only using IPs, without an account, please see simple:User:Chenzw/Pakistan. Many of the edits have probably been fixed. To see the user's contributions, click on "changes" on every IP address listed in User:Chenzw/Pakistan. As for whether the Kashmir article specifically is neutral now, it seems fine now. 68.96.213.118 19:46, 1 دسمبر 2008 (UTC)

Foundation Images Policy[ترمیم]

Hi everyone,
I am Yosri from Malay Wikipedia. Recently I was informed by certain parties that MS Wiki need to delete any images tagged as Non-Commercial under Foundation Licensing policy. After I have done some studies, I realised that Wikipedia Foundations is moving towards allowing commercialises all images, as such they are acting on behalf of commercial company to require all images loaded with tagging Non-Commercial in all Wiki Project to be removed, including those loaded in local Wiki. You are only allowed to licenses your images under "free content", which specifically allows commercial reuse, example GDLF 1.2. Certain images is exempted under a very narrow EDP ("exemption doctrine policy") definition. If you all already aware about this, please ignore this comment. Otherwise, for more details please visit http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump#Wikimedia_projects_still_using_non-commercial-only_images.3F Yosri 05:17, 2 مارچ 2011 (UTC)

Accepting Awami Nastaliq font[ترمیم]

Dear friends,

I'm glad to recommened a new Nastaliq style font to you to display Urdu Wikipedia articles. Recently I have noticed a new font produced for everyone — Awami Nastaliq, this is a Nastaliq-style Arabic script font supporting a wide variety of languages of southwest Asia, including not only Urdu but also other languages of Pakistan, India and others. Unlike other fonts, this font require Graphite text layout engine (most notably, in Firefox), including some unusual base characters and diacritics used other than Urdu (as what the font named — awami), and using Graphite’s smart shape-based kerning mechanism to get better spacing and positioning between the words, additionaly, the base characters often include multiple alternate glyphs that could be make used of when displaying running texts. Feel free to making this font works with Common.css. Also, you can try to make this font works with Saraiki or Panjabi Wikipedias if you fell in love with this font and you can contact their Wikipedians. :-)

You can see http://software.sil.org/awami/ for more details.

If you have concern about this font you can try to add this font after Noto Nastaliq, as what I made in this sandbox.

New Readers research[ترمیم]

Hello!

You may have heard that several teams at the Wikimedia Foundation are collaborating to do research in several countries as part of the New Readers project. The project aims for a better understanding of how people think about knowledge, learning, and the internet. With this, we can start to figure out why Wikipedia reading rates are so low in countries where internet usage is rising so quickly.

To learn this, we are doing qualitative research sprints in Mexico, Nigeria, and YES, India.

That’s where you come in. We want our research to reflect needs and experiences of Wikimedia communities throughout India. Specifically: what questions do you have about general internet users in India? What groups (language, professional, regional) would you like to know more about? What barriers do you believe exist for potential Wikipedia readers? You can see our key priorities for this research here.

If you have thoughts or questions, please email me at jsutherland@wikimedia.org! We will share our proposed research approach with your inputs incorporated wherever possible by next week. We're excited to work with you! JSutherland (WMF) (تبادلۂ خیالشراکتیں) 23:00, 11 مئی 2016 (م ع و)

Editor interface group[ترمیم]

Good morning,

In this discussion, you agreed to create an editor interface group.

The editor interface permissions are very sensisitive, as they could be abused to inject harmful or privacy-risky content on the wiki.

Bureaucrats are especially used to deal with sensitive rights, and the traditional guardians of such rights on Wikimedia projects, so we would like this group to be managed by bureaucrats and not by sysops.

That means:

  • sysops will retain the editinterface right, new admins will have it, nothing change there
  • any person currently in the interface editors group will retain the editinterface right
  • bureaucrats will be able to add users to this group, remove users from this group
  • sysops won't be able anymore to add users to this group or remove users from this group

Do you agree with such change?

This is tracked on Phabricator as T133564.
