لوسیفر (Lucifer) (تلفظ: /ˈl[invalid input: 'ʲ']uːsɪfər/ LEW-sif-ər) کتاب مقدس کے شاہ جیمز نسخہ میں کتاب یسعیاہ (14:12) میں عبرانی لفظ (הֵילֵל) سے ماخوذ ہے۔ لفظ کی نقل حرفی (hêlêl یا heylel) ہے۔[1][2] یہ لفظ عبرانی کتاب مقدس [3] میں صرف ایک بار آیا ہے جس کے معنی چمکتا ہوا، صبح کا ستارہ ہیں۔[4] لفظ لوسیفر کتاب مقدس کے لاطینی نسخہ [5] سے لیے گیا ہے جس کی نقل حرفی (הֵילֵל) بطور لوسیفر ہے، [Isa 14:12][6][7] جس کے معنی صبح کا ستارہ، سیارہ زہرہ یا اسم صفت روشنی لانے والا کے ہیں۔[8] ہفتادی (Septuagint) کے مطابق لفظ הֵילֵל یونانی میں ἑωσφόρος [9][10][11][12][13] نقل حرفی (heōsphoros)[14][15][16] ایک اسم ہے جس کے لفظی معنی طلوع لانے والا، صبح کے ستارے سے ۔

موخر میں مسیحی روایت میں لاطینی لفظ "صبح کا ستارہ"، لوسیفر بطور اسم خاص شیطان کے لیے بے دخلی سے قبل کے لیے استعمال ہوتا ہے۔[17] اسی کے نتیجے میں لوسیفر شیطان کے لیے ایک متبادل لفظ بن گیا ہے جو کلیسا اور ادب میں استعمال ہوتا ہے۔[18]
