 پشتون قبائل کے ماخذ کے دعوے اور  نظریات بکثرت ہیں   .[1][2] ان میں (١) قدیم داستان کے مطابق ان کا بادشاہ ساؤل (طالوت) سے ہیں  ، جو کبھی کبھی بنی اسرائیل کے ماخذ کے نظریہ کے طور بھی لی جاتی ہے ؛ (٢)  حضرتابراہیم  اور کتورا  کی نسل میں سے ہونا ; (٣) سکندر  کے لشکر اور یونانی جنوب ایشیائی ریاستوں کی نسل ہونا ; (4)  آریائی (مشرقی ہندی-یورپی) قبائل کی نسل سے ہونا ; اور (5) ہفتھالی (سفید ہن) کی اولاد ہونا .[3]   ڈی این اے کے مطالعے سے قبل عام طور پر یہ تسلیم کیا جاتا رہا ہے کہ ان کی اصل اور ماخذ گمنام ہے،[4][5] اور جدید دانشوروں کا خیال ہے کہ پشتونوں کا  ایک اصل اور ماخذ  ہونے کے امکانات معدوم ہیں۔[6]
